Diversity at Southroyd

With cooperative values key to our school ethos, we continually update and review our equality and diversity practice. We have a spiralised curriculum designed specifically for our school community which develops their knowledge year on year, in an age appropriate way whilst responding to issues within school and the media.

As part of the normal cycle, parents, staff and children are surveyed to monitor our progress towards tolerance and the promotion of diversity in school.

We use the curriculum and communications to make sure that the richness of a diverse society are shared to enrich our learning and experiences within the modern world.

Prejudice and Migration Workshop

To explore themes of diversity and tolerance, children from Y5 enjoyed workshops on prejudice and migration to learn about migrants and their stories, with help from Louise at the Leeds DEC. The children learnt the definition of unconscious bias and listened to stories of people who have had to migrate to different countries and how prejudice has affected them.

We invite guests to school and try to enable a varied range of experiences towards the promotion of diversity.

Using Big Talk

As part of Big Talk in Summer, 2021 the children explored themes and issues of diversity.

Year 1  valued the chance to talk and share about their different families - being so happy and amazed at how many different ways people can be a family !

Year 1 children said :

"We are all different but that is ok. It is good to be different. The world would be boring if we all looked the same and thought the same."

"Our houses are all different because they look different but they are the same because they are all full of loving families."

"It is nice to talk about our families, now I know that I am not the only one with two houses."

"I like it that my friends are different because then they think of different games to play."

"We don't all live in the same house but we all love each other lots."

"Some of my brothers and sisters live with us and their Mummy too, so I get to play with all my brothers and sisters."
