Read to Succeed
"We are proud and sure that if it were not for the philosophy and guiding principle of the Southroyd school, which encourages reading and constantly promotes reading, the result would not be so high. This is our common success." (The view of a parent who's child Niko was hugely successful in reading upon his arrival in Year 7.)
Starting originally within the School Development Plan, we began to target the increase in the percentage of fluent, confident and ambitious readers in school. We are committed to further raising the profile of reading using a range of strategies, as well as widely promoting the value of reading and its effect on learning success. In assemblies we have shared the importance of reading, looking at inspirational people and their thoughts about the importance of reading, sharing some of the research into the link between successful learning and engagement in reading.

How we will support "Read to Succeed"
We take real text to investigate spelling and grammar, rather than using exercises
We will ensure that guided reading is effective in enriching vocabulary and increasing fluency.
We will provide engaging reading areas in classrooms which are well resourced.
We will use class novels in all classrooms to enable an enrichment in vocabulary
We will ensure improved vocabulary is evident in vocabulary choice in writing.
The vocabulary parade for World Book Day 2023 enabled children to come to school as a book character or in a costume to reflect a chosen word - for example, we had "misunderstood" for a character dressed as Goldilocks, and a fairy reflecting the word "kaleidoscopic" - during the day we shared a lot of exciting new vocabulary!
World Book Day
As well as enjoying the World Book Day theme of bedtime story, we enjoyed a great family World Book Day Trail in our school grounds on Saturday, 4th March.
Over 200 people came to the event and enjoyed finding clues about some famous authors to find their way around the grounds trail.
At the amazing 2024 Book Trail, there were two inspirational authors in school including Chris Naylor-Ballesteros and our very own Angela Allworthy.
