P.E. at Southroyd Primary and Nursery School
At Southroyd, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital in its contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional development and health. The PE curriculum aims to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil’s needs and abilities.
We believe that the Fundamental Movement Skills (Agility, Balance and Co-ordination) are key to children being able to engage with and enjoy PE, Sport and Physical Activity.
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which covers the statutory requirements of the curriculum, as well as an extensive offer of extra-curricular opportunities to suit the many needs and interests of our children here at Southroyd.
We are proud to be a part of the West Leeds School Partnership and also an active member of a very strong local partnership, within the West Leeds area.
Southroyd sporting teams have gained success at many levels in the ‘School Games’ competitions and our West Leeds partnership tournaments in a variety of sporting areas
including cricket, sportshall athletics, multi-skills, football, netball, rugby, tennis and Pudsey Olympics.
We work closely alongside gymnastics coaches, an external Street Dance club and Next Generation Football, in school, to deliver further opportunities for our children.
We are extremely proud to have gained a School Games GOLD mark and a Silver Quality Mark from the Youth Sport Trust, in recognition of the PE provision and outcomes for children, both curricular and extra-curricular that we provide here at Southroyd.
At Southroyd Primary School we believe that physical activity contributes to optimum behaviour, physical fitness and growth and development which assists pupils in reaching their learning potential.
* We want our children to be exposed to a wealth of opportunities in school, around the city and in the wider community.
* We recognise the importance of participation and the role of competitive sport in sustaining healthy and active lifestyles.
* We have an established relationship with many local sports clubs and see the importance of providing sporting pathways to children, enabling our school to be well represented at club level.

At Southroyd we are continuing to focus on Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA). We have already introduced our walking strategy, a traversing wall, a heart line and many of the staff at Southroyd are trained to deliver activities at Fanwood Outdoor Activity at which we hold our Y4 OAA residential. Below are the statutory requirements of the new curriculum.
PE in KS 1
Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils should be taught to:
* master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities;
* participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending;
The Southroyd Euros - participation for all.

PE in KS 2
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils should be taught to:
* use running, jumping, catching and throwing in isolation and in combination
* play competitive games, modified where appropriate, such as football, netball, rounders, cricket, hockey, basketball, badminton and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for
attacking and defending
* develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, for example through gymnastics and athletics
* perform dances using a range of movement patterns
* take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
* compare their performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best.
Swimming and water safety
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
* swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
* use a range of strokes effectively such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
* perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
