Mathematics at Southroyd Primary School
Visions and Aims:
At Southroyd Primary School we aim to empower our children to foster a growth mindset with a ‘Can do’ attitude in mathematics. We encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and aim for all pupils to enjoy and achieve in mathematics and become confident, able mathematicians.
We believe that maths should be purposeful, and children are made aware of its importance in real life contexts. We place value on cross-curricular maths where possible e.g science, DT etc, so that children place value on it as a tool for making sense of the world.
We want our children to become life-long mathematicians and confident problem-solvers. We use a mastery-style teaching approach supported by the White Rose Maths scheme of work. Each lesson features pair work, independent work and a great deal of discussion, often supported by the use of stem sentences. Children use maths equipment such as Dienes, Numicon, Base 10, place value counters, ten frames and place value charts to support them in their learning. Pictorial representations are also integral to each lesson to help the children to understand the concepts they are being taught.

Maths Fluency/Mental Maths
It is crucial that children learn key instant recall facts (Kirfs) as fluently as possible to allow them to become competent problem solvers. You can see the Kirfs for each year group below.
Maths Calculations
See our calculation policies below. These will provide you with guidance on the methods that we use for the four mathematical operations of: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
